New Hampshire Citizens Against More Taxation believes that we have enough taxes in New Hampshire. We believe that the best way to raise money to fund the state budget and meet the state’s obligation to fund education is through additional revenue, not more taxes.
No More Taxation
Since June 2, 1784, when New Hampshire adopted its State Constitution, the citizens of the Granite State have been freedom fighters. Freedom from unwanted and unnecessary taxation has long been a core principle of New Hampshire life and that has made our state different from every other state in the nation. We are hard-working, fair-minded citizens who understand that some taxation is needed to provide basic state services. For 200 years, New Hampshire has done this without the need for a sales or income tax.
Now, we have a temporary budget shortfall and a court-ordered state obligation to fund education. We believe that the New Hampshire Legislature can and should resolve both of these issues without additional taxes. We are opposed to an income tax, a sales tax, or increases in state business taxes as the answer.
Video Gaming Solution
The New Hampshire Commission on Education Funding, in its report released on January 8, 2001, studied all of the tax and revenue options that would raise money for the state. Video gaming was the only option considered that would not increase taxes for New Hampshire citizens and businesses. All of the other options take money out of the pockets of New Hampshire taxpayers.
Video gaming is entertainment for adults. No one is forced to play video gaming, it’s a choice, not a mandate as taxes would be. Using the commission’s own conservative estimates, video gaming would raise between $200 and $250 Million in additional state revenue without taxing the people of this state.
New Hampshire Citizen Against More Taxation supports state-regulated and controlled video gaming only at the four current race tracks, Hinsdale, Rockingham, Seabrook, and Belmont. We believe that permitting video gaming at these four locations will do the following:
- Raise revenue the state needs without
additional taxation.
- Attract tourists from other states
who enjoy video gaming.
- Create jobs and bring new business
opportunities to the state.
- Permit the state to regulate and control video gaming entertainment and prohibit Las Vegas style casinos.
